Tiny Tuesday – “Legerdemaniac”

She was a drug: intoxicating, deadly, addictive. The illusionist hated the way his body thrilled at the sight of her. He’d abandoned everything he loved, and for what?

Her hungry eyes locked on his from offstage. He ignored her, and tried to picture his wife’s face instead. Nothing came. He tucked the key away.

She climbed into the tank and the crowd hushed.

Minutes later behind the glass, her eyes were white and terrified. He watched her gulp down death, and felt a primal satisfaction.

I will wash away my sins, he thought, as the crowd realized his assistant was drowning.
